In this Italian Pilsner case its a little peppery - black pepper, spicy in general in beer means like spices you use to cook with. Its not necessarily hot spicy. For instance Cinnamon is a spice so that can also be referred to as spicy.
Spiciness refers to a range of flavors that can be referred to as various spices, herbs, or botanicals. These flavors can range from subtle hints of cinnamon or nutmeg to more pronounced notes of cloves or black pepper.
I should have clarified that spicy in this instance meant black peppery.
The New Zealand is one that grows on you. Like I say you have to taste it and ponder what you;ve just tasted.
Thanks, Martin. That's kind of what I assumed. That is in line with how I would describe the Argentinian wines that I like so much. I've never had a Mendoza wine that I didn't like. The wines from that region are often what I would describe as "spicy" in the ways that you have referenced.
That New Zealand IPA sounds great.
Can you describe "spicy" as a descriptor of beer?
